PC DMX512 interface

The DMX-Dongle II™ is a high specification DMX512 Receiver - Transmitter It connects to the Printer port of any PC compatible computer. The DMX-Dongle is supplied with both Windows and DOS software packages. (Please note that this product will not work with USB-Parallel adapters).

Windows User Software

The Windows software is called DMX-Workshop. DMX-Workshop provides access to all the power of the DMX-Dongle II and also all Art-Net Ethernet devices.

All DMX512 header codes can be received.

The detail screen provides all the protocol timing data along with a log of frames received and any errors detected.

DMX-Workshop also provides an Oscilloscope display of channels levels, full screen mimic and MIDI data analysis.

Display and analysis of new DMX512-A features such as Text Packets and System Information Packets is also provided.

Windows Development Software

A Windows DLL (32 bit) is supplied free of charge with the DMX-Dongle.

The DLL is compatible with Windows 95 / 98 / ME / 2000 / NT / XP & Vista(32).

Example applications for Borland C++Builder and Microsoft Visual C are also included.

DOS User Software

The DMX-Analysis software package is DOS based and supplied free of charge with the DMX-Dongle.

DMX-Analysis provides control for both transmit and receive.

The transmit section allows up to 50 DMX memories to be programmed and stored on disc.

Editing of channel data can be performed in decimal, hexadecimal or binary.

The capabilities of the transmit section are perfect for testing and calibrating moving lights and colour scrollers.

The receive section allows any 64 of the possible 512 channels to be displayed on screen. The display format may be selected as decimal, hexadecimal or binary.

All DMX512 start codes can be received and transmitted.

The detail screen provides all the protocol timing and error data
including: Refresh rate and cycle time, Number of channels in frame, Break time, Mark after Break time, Number of frames received, Number of non matching start codes received, Number of overrun errors received and Number of framing errors received.

Full analysis of the new DMX512-A System Information Packet is also provided.

Windows Development Software

A complete C development library is supplied free of charge with the DMX-Dongle.

The C-Library is DOS based and optimised for the Borland series of compilers.

Full source code is included and the library is royalty free.

Frequently Asked Questions

• What operating systems can I usec for Grand-Master Flash?
  Windows 95 / Windows 98 / Windows ME / Windows NT / Windows 2000 / Windows XP.
• DMX-Output is flickering.
  Check that you are only running one application that uses the Dongle at any one time.
• DOS software cannot locate DMX-Dongle.
  In the folder C:\Dongle you will find a DOS program called 'check.exe'. The program looks at all three printer port addresses and attempts to locate the DMX-Dongle. If successful, it displays the address at which the Dongle is found. If the address is not the default (0x378), you will need to type the address as a command line switch for DMX-Analysis. EG: DMX 0x278. If check.exe does not locate the DMX-Dongle, there are two possible causes. 1) The power lead (with the keyboard / mouse) is not plugged into the PC. 2) The printer port is either mis-configured or disabled in the BIOS.
• My PC does not have a keyboard socket.
  You can power the DMX-Dongle from either the keyboard or the mouse socket. If your PC has neither, a USB adapter is available. Contact support@artisticlicence.com for more information.
• I get errors when installing the software on Windows 2000.
  There are no known problems with installation on any Windows platform. The most likely cause is forgetting to log on as Admin, prior to installing. If this occurs, uninstall the software, switch to Admin and then reinstall.
• What is the difference between the two types of DMX-Dongle?
  DMX-Dongle I was manufactured in a grey plastic case. It has been out of production for about 5 years. DMX-Dongle II is the current product. It is manufactured in a red rubberised case. The DMX-Dongle II is about five times faster than the predecessor. The DMX-Dongle I is still supported by the DOS applications.
• What is the difference between the DMX-Dongle II and the Vision 500?
  Only the colour of the case!
